These mounted nude figures are cut freestyle with a precision blade. No drawings are done to determine the movement or body. The Black female form is heavily present in my artwork as a reflection of my lived experiences, resistance toward microaggression, and the oppressive narratives of Black women’s bodies. I am affirming the existence of contemporary women of color. I am inspired by the figurative work of Mickalene Thomas, Alison Saar, Emma Amos, Henry Taylor, William H. Johnson, Charles Alston, Nina Chanel Abney, and Eldizer Cortor for capturing emotional and raw spirits of Blackness. Henri Matisse’s Blue Nude series largely inspired this body of work.
